CAN I LOOSE WEIGHT WITH YOGA?
We celebrated the International Yoga Day yesterday . Lots of people around the world joined the celebrations and often they have started their practice because they were looking for a physical practice helping them to shed off some kilograms. Saying that yoga is still often seen as an activity to accompany other more dynamic ones and not as effective.
So CAN YOU LOOSE WEIGHT WITH YOGA?
I’ve been asked that question so many times …
The answer is … YES, YES , YES!
Weight loss happens when you take in fewer calories than you expend. Increase your movement through exercise and you burn more calories.

What is a calorie and how do we lose weight ?

Calorie is a measure of unit of energy-the amount of energy necessary to increase the temperature of 1 liter of water by 1 degree centigrade. According to the first law of thermodynamics energy is neither created nor destroyed, but is  transferred from one form to another. This means that when you eat food that contains 100 calories, you will do one of two things with it: You will either expend the energy through activity  or save it for use at another time (stored -you know where 😉).

Therefore it is important to monitor both the number of calories coming in through dietary intake and the amount of calories being burned through physical activity.

How many calories you burn in yoga depends on the style and then intensity level of the practice, and factors such as your age, size.

WHAT STYLES OF YOGA HELP BURN MORE CALORIES?

Calories burned during yoga vary widely — from 180 to 360 per hour — depending on the type of yoga you practice. Vinyasa, Ashtanga, and forms of Power Yoga – the most athletic forms which work on your cardio, strength ,flexibility are the best calorie burners.
Breathing techniques used during the class ( such as ujaji pranayama) create heat and enhance detoxification.

WHAT ARE THE BEST ASANAS FOR WEIGHTLOSS?

I’d be careful with saying there are any “ best “ ones but I’d definitely recommend all the surya namaskara variations due to their heat creating , cardiovascular aspect, twists as they improve digestion ( massage digestive organs), arm balances and inversions as they require lots of physical effort.

But more gentle styles such as Yin and restorative yoga can help with weight loss as well by improving the work of the parasympathetic nervous system. As a result hormones rebalance, injuries heal and digestion improves.
And hormones are the key. Often people struggle with their weight even though they train and watch their nutrition. That may indicate issues with the thyroid’s function, imbalanced estrogen and/ or testosterone levels, high cortisol.
